{"id":1038,"date":"2012-05-02T19:03:37","date_gmt":"2012-05-03T00:03:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/?p=1038"},"modified":"2012-05-01T09:14:04","modified_gmt":"2012-05-01T14:14:04","slug":"your-needs-and-values","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/2012\/05\/your-needs-and-values\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Needs and Values"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s interesting how these words keep coming into my life.\u00a0 A friend shared an article about living a values focused life and in the coaching program I\u2019m in, we\u2019ve talked about values and needs \u2013 both for ourselves as well as for our clients.\u00a0 Each student was given slips of paper with words on them and we chose 3-4 words (some say values are 6-10) to identify our values and then again for our needs.<\/p>\n<p>We all know that \u201cneeds\u201d are things we can\u2019t live without, yet in some ways it\u2019s more than that.\u00a0 These are also our personal principles and priorities \u2013 the things we need to make sure life is working for us.\u00a0 These are the values and desires of what matters most to us and they help to create a meaningful life.\u00a0 As you will see, this is also beyond the basic elements to keep us alive, things that we all need, and is more about personally what our individual needs are \u2013 those things that if we didn\u2019t have, there would be a hole.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">These are 4 that I\u2019ve identified for <em>my<\/em> needs: introspection, nature, connection, and self-worth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">What are <strong>your needs<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>Then we look at our values.\u00a0 These are things that are your personal qualities or passions.\u00a0 What is important as you live each day?\u00a0 What is integral to who you are at your core?\u00a0 This is a reflection of what matters as you live your life and who you really are.\u00a0\u00a0 These are often things that we cherish both in ourselves as well as others, when someone else shares or expresses the same value.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">These are 5 that I\u2019ve identified for <em>my<\/em> values: accountability (self), honesty, creativity, tolerance, and knowledge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">What are <strong>your values<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>If your needs are not getting met, it can be a challenge to lead that a life that is fulfilling and meaningful for yourself.\u00a0 These are things that you make sure are part of your life \u2013 and the first step to living a life that works for you.\u00a0 Once you identify your needs, you can then integrate them into your life.<\/p>\n<p>Once you are getting your needs met, you then need to focus on your values.\u00a0 Our values are shaped by all of our cumulative life experiences and are our compass for directing our choices.<\/p>\n<p>In general terms, when we try to develop new habits and make changes to our life, it can be challenging. \u00a0We might know what we need to do to get where we want to go \u2013 yet that doesn\u2019t mean it just happens.\u00a0 How do your goals relate to your needs and values?\u00a0 When we set goals and make decisions based on our values, it\u2019s more satisfying to accomplish them.<\/p>\n<p>You are more than your job, your home, your clutter, your procrastination, your health, etcetera.\u00a0 Who are you down at your core?\u00a0 These are the pieces to remember as life happens \u2013 your needs and values.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You are so much more than your job, your health, and your struggles.
