Just before I got married, I decided it would be fun to get a makeover and test make-up out for the wedding.\u00a0 I eventually bought a handful of items.\u00a0 Then I resumed my typical make-up habits, wearing little to none most of the time.\u00a0 Yet, one day I put more on.\u00a0 And the strangest thing happened, my eyes swelled up and became quite red \u2013 the skin all around them.\u00a0 I\u2019d reacted to the make-up.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t me as it turned out.\u00a0 Make-up expires, I discovered after calling the manufacturer.<\/p>\n

The thing was that this wasn\u2019t the first time that I used make-up that I had purchased a while back.\u00a0 I also tend to buy the same brands.\u00a0 It was the first time I ever reacted to make-up.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always tried to use common sense \u2013 does it look and smell funny?\u00a0 Yet this last time, it hadn\u2019t been that<\/em> long and nothing raised the warning flags.<\/p>\n

Make-up is easy to collect \u2013 it\u2019s pretty small and is easy to have in different locations.\u00a0 I find that it can be challenging to part with \u2013 \u201cI spent all this money to buy it, I should use it.\u201d\u00a0 Yet, how much do you use all of it?\u00a0 Does it sit there waiting to be used?\u00a0 Here\u2019s a picture of the pile of make-up I dumped out of a bag a while back \u2013 before I went through it and purged my collection.<\/p>\n

There are two ways they measure the time of make-up expiring \u2013 from the production date and the period after opening (PAO).\u00a0 Unfortunately there\u2019s no real regulation on cosmetics though the FDA does oversee it somewhat.\u00a0 Although the smell can indicate something might no longer be good, it\u2019s not as clear as the perfume that\u2019s gone bad and is suddenly quite stinky.<\/p>\n

Although it\u2019s often convenient, storing make-up in the bathroom can contribute to it\u2019s going bad more quickly.\u00a0 The moisture and humidity can shorten the life expectancy of make-up.\u00a0 Ideally, temperature and humidity will be controlled to maximize how long the make-up lasts.<\/p>\n

Some people struggle with the feeling it\u2019s so wasteful to toss those beauty products that have been around \u2013 \u201cI\u2019ll use it soon.\u201d\u00a0 After my puffy eyes for a week, I\u2019m more reluctant to push the limits now \u2013 even though this was several years ago now.\u00a0 That\u2019s why when I found another bag of make-up, I emptied it out and threw most of it away \u2013 here\u2019s what I kept, mostly brushes and a pencil sharpener.\u00a0 It was challenging to face the waste I\u2019d inadvertently created and throw it away \u2013 yet red, puffy eyes are not something I want to risk again. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Consider your own beauty products \u2013 how many do you have that you don\u2019t use regularly?\u00a0 If you\u2019re not using them, use the money to get something else you will actually appreciate and in the process avoid any risk to have a reaction to products that have gone bad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
