{"id":1185,"date":"2012-09-12T19:03:36","date_gmt":"2012-09-13T00:03:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/?p=1185"},"modified":"2012-09-12T18:44:31","modified_gmt":"2012-09-12T23:44:31","slug":"learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/2012\/09\/learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many years ago now, I was talking with my husband about work and management roles.\u00a0 He was talking about the importance of employees continuing their education, how people need to be reading magazines and books related to their career- always furthering their training and education.\u00a0 At the time, it made sense on one level to me, I could understand that if you are in a job you need to be continuing to educate yourself about what is going on in the industry and increasing your knowledge base.\u00a0 Due to where I was at the time, I also cringed.\u00a0 Uh-oh!<\/p>\n<p>To me this is a great sign whether we are in a career that speaks to who we truly are.\u00a0 Are we following our life passion?\u00a0 I shifted my direction and can honestly say now that I don\u2019t think I will ever be satisfied with my knowledge on organizing, time management, productivity, efficiency, etc.\u00a0 I am constantly searching and questioning.\u00a0 I do this for myself as well as for what it can provide for my clients.\u00a0 It excites and interests me \u2013 it\u2019s not \u201cwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are some people who are so curious they study many different things, and I do have this temptation sometimes.\u00a0 Yet, we all have limited time and energy \u2013 there\u2019s only so much we can learn.\u00a0 Learning might not even be the highest priority \u2013 we\u2019re already juggling many different life responsibilities.\u00a0 This is one of the reasons we don\u2019t even try to learn how to do everything for ourselves; we have a network of people to turn to.<\/p>\n<p>Although I could be fascinated with learning woodworking \u2013 the real deal \u2013 how to make gorgeous furniture out of wood, I am not that committed to it.\u00a0 It\u2019s too involved for me, and I\u2019d rather be doing other things with my time. I\u2019m pretty sure we all have interests that we decide not to pursue \u2013 at least for the moment.\u00a0 Does this make you feel badly?\u00a0 Are you ashamed that there\u2019s a limit to what you\u2019ll try to learn?\u00a0 Will you avoid turning to someone who does know about a particular subject?<\/p>\n<p>There comes a time when it\u2019s worthwhile to ask for help.\u00a0 I\u2019ve taken yoga classes a few times; I have yoga videos and equipment.\u00a0 This doesn\u2019t stop me from deciding that in the next couple of months I will sign up for a yoga class.\u00a0 There\u2019s several reasons why \u2013 I want the accountability and motivation of a class and I want someone to be able correct my poses, to name a couple of reasons.\u00a0 I will probably struggle with some sense of embarrassment \u2013 I\u2019m sure my yoga practice is back at a beginner level.\u00a0 Nevertheless, it\u2019s well worth it to me.\u00a0 Nor does it mean that I won\u2019t be learning independently of the class.<\/p>\n<p>Do you know when it\u2019s time to ask for help?\u00a0 Whether it\u2019s something you think you \u201cshould\u201d be able to solve on your own or it\u2019s something that you find embarrassing to admit to \u2013 there\u2019s a time to turn to someone who is educated and passionate about the topic.\u00a0 Too often I hear of people resisting turning to someone to help them \u2013 from the wanting to exercise regularly yet won\u2019t ask friends or hire a trainer, even for a short time to get them started.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to do it alone.\u00a0 You certainly cannot be an expert in everything.<\/p>\n<p>We all need to recognize what it is that we have time and energy to learn on our own and when it\u2019s time to turn to an expert.\u00a0 This can be more challenging depending on what it is that needs expert attention.\u00a0 Many of us don\u2019t hesitate to take our cars to a mechanic and visit the doctor when we need.\u00a0 Sometimes when it\u2019s more personal, intimate we might resist.\u00a0 I encourage you to open up to places where asking for help could make all the difference \u2013 you don\u2019t need to learn everything alone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I often think of myself as an eternal student \u2013 I love learning things.
