{"id":1255,"date":"2012-11-28T19:03:06","date_gmt":"2012-11-29T01:03:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/?p=1255"},"modified":"2012-11-28T18:44:48","modified_gmt":"2012-11-29T00:44:48","slug":"calendar-considerations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/2012\/11\/calendar-considerations\/","title":{"rendered":"Calendar Considerations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s getting to that time of year when many of us might be purchasing calendars for the upcoming year. \u00a0There are many factors involved if you want to consider something different for yourself.\u00a0 And let me say up front, I strongly feel that if you have something that works for you, it\u2019s ideal to stick with what works for you.\u00a0 Period.\u00a0 If the system you\u2019ve been using isn\u2019t working as well, then it\u2019s time to as least think about the options you have.\u00a0 So, let\u2019s jump right in and discuss the variations in the way calendars are designed.<\/p>\n<p>First, we have the big choice between paper and digital.\u00a0 As I\u2019ve already said, if what you use works, then stick with it.\u00a0 Even if that means you have a paper calendar.\u00a0 There\u2019s nothing wrong about sticking with a paper calendar in our growing digital society.\u00a0 On the other hand, if the paper isn\u2019t working for you, then it\u2019s worth considering if a digital calendar would be more effective.<\/p>\n<p>When using a digital calendar, most people think of the more portable \u2013 the phone and tablets \u2013 although some people still use just their computer calendar.\u00a0 There is a learning curve if this is new to you \u2013 as with anything new.\u00a0 You need to get used to how it works and often learn to trust it.\u00a0 The digital calendars often have multiple ways to view it \u2013 similar to the paper calendars \u2013 you have daily, weekly, and monthly, which give you the flexibility to focus on your schedule in the way that works for you.<\/p>\n<p>One of the features that I appreciate in the digital calendar is the ability to set alarms \u2013 I choose the amount of forewarning I want (or if I don\u2019t want one at all).\u00a0 Another positive aspect of the digital is how I can create repeating events easily and have no need to enter the information more than once.\u00a0 It just occurred to me also that there\u2019s no recurring cost for the digital calendars or getting it up to date for the coming year \u2013 I have some appointments repeating forever.<\/p>\n<p>Second, when you are looking at paper calendars, you need to decide on the format you want.\u00a0 Most calendars have a monthly view in addition to either a daily or a weekly view.\u00a0 Depending on your needs, a weekly view is usually sufficient for most people as it allows you to put in many appointments as well as some tasks (if you chose to do that).\u00a0 The weekly view also gives you an easy overview of what\u2019s coming up.<\/p>\n<p>I reviewed 2 planners last year, both of which I still think about and appreciate: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/2011\/10\/planner-pad-organizers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Planner Pad<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/2011\/11\/taylor-planner\/\" target=\"_blank\">Taylor Planner<\/a>.\u00a0 If I was still using a paper calendar, I would be using one of these and I would be torn about which one.<\/p>\n<p>Something else you want to think about is how you handle your to-dos.\u00a0 Do you put them into your calendar?\u00a0 Do you put them in another place within the calendar or are they completely separate?\u00a0 What other things do you want or need to track with your calendar (or calendar system) \u2013 phone numbers, grocery lists, websites, projects, ideas, etc?
