I\u2019ve talked before the idea of gifting experiences instead of stuff.\u00a0 As well as talked about how the containers and tools we use for organizing need to fit our needs \u2013 their purpose is to make our life easier.\u00a0 Earlier this year I talked about Technology Tools<\/a> and how these too need to be evaluated on how they could help us.\u00a0 Therefore, let\u2019s move into media \u2013 my beloved books and music!<\/p>\n

You might be getting sick of hearing how I hold onto books and CD\u2019s, yet these too are about the experience.\u00a0 When I read, I\u2019m learning or exploring \u2013 it\u2019s information that I delve into and appreciate greatly.\u00a0 When I listen to music, whether it\u2019s on in the background or I\u2019m soaking it in \u2013 it\u2019s part of my experience.\u00a0 These mediums are essentially about the experience of them.\u00a0 If they\u2019re not used, they become either d\u00e9cor or clutter.<\/p>\n

Since their purpose is to be used \u2013 are you using them as effectively as you can and want?\u00a0 For me, I knew I was missing much of our music.\u00a0 I simply forgot what we had, even with as organized as the CD\u2019s are, and so they would stay in their drawers.\u00a0 And I was resisting the idea of digitizing our music.\u00a0 Yet as I thought about all the lovely music we have \u2013 about 800 albums of a wide variety of genres, and the ensuing guilt over owning yet not appreciating them \u2013 I agreed to move them into digital form.<\/p>\n

We used an external hard drive to store the digitized music, purchased the Sonos<\/a> system to have access to our music wirelessly, and presto we have digital access to our entire music library.\u00a0 Now we can listen and appreciate the music we love, which is what matters most.\u00a0 In addition, we used the process of digitizing our music to purge \u2013 was there any reason to keep those albums we ended up not loving?<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve not jumped into an e-reader yet \u2013 and am not sure if I will.\u00a0 I read daily and our books are organized so I can find what I want or need.\u00a0 Yet, as I\u2019ve talked about with all these other things \u2013 what are your personal needs?\u00a0 This isn\u2019t about following the crowd, but rather about whether an e-reader would facilitate your needs and values.<\/p>\n

Remember, this is about the experience \u2013 and whether you hold a book in your hands or an e-reader, you can jump into the words, knowledge, and world either way.\u00a0 If I was traveling more I don\u2019t think I could resist getting an e-reader \u2013 having any number of books available in one convenient place (without any additional weight).\u00a0 I\u2019m impressed with the ease it can offer for people to read \u2013 in the waiting rooms, lunch breaks, wherever there\u2019s some available time.<\/p>\n

As with virtually everything I talk about \u2013 I am not advocating one thing or another.\u00a0 It\u2019s about your life and what can help you in living it they way you want \u2013 to make the most of the experiences you want.\u00a0 And, I\u2019m not saying that you need to get rid of the physical items even if they\u2019re digital.\u00a0 We kept most of our CD\u2019s, only parting with about 70 of them.\u00a0 Similarly, I couldn\u2019t imagine parting with many of our books.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s all about experiencing the content.\u00a0 If you\u2019re not accessing them, is there a better way?\u00a0 What\u2019s getting in the way of using them?\u00a0 The digital possibilities offer us options in order for us to have the experience of them regardless of the medium.\u00a0 If you consider yourself a book or music lover, does your life reflect those values?\u00a0 If not, it might be time to consider alternatives that can help you in living your values.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Containers, electronics, and gadgets, oh my! These tools are to be used to maximize living our life \u2013 to have the experiences we want \u2013 therefore consider your media, is it largely collecting dust while you might be piling up the guilt?
