{"id":170,"date":"2010-09-29T20:05:05","date_gmt":"2010-09-30T01:05:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/?p=170"},"modified":"2010-09-29T20:05:05","modified_gmt":"2010-09-30T01:05:05","slug":"being-organized-is-not-necessarily-being-clean-and-vice-versa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/2010\/09\/being-organized-is-not-necessarily-being-clean-and-vice-versa\/","title":{"rendered":"Being Organized is Not Necessarily being Clean and Vice Versa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do you want to know a secret?\u00a0 It\u2019s not something I\u2019m proud of \u2013 I dislike cleaning.\u00a0 I love organizing and always clean as a process of organizing.\u00a0 There\u2019s no better time to get everything spic and span than as you set up new systems.\u00a0 Sometimes clients will ask me, \u201cOf course, your house is always clean, right?\u201d\u00a0 There is a big difference between being organized and being clean, though both flourish with being part of a routine.<\/p>\n<p>Do you know anyone whose house is always immaculate, yet if you get a glimpse of one of their drawers, it is overflowing with stuff?\u00a0 Or there is a room that is off limits, while the rest of the house is pristine?\u00a0 Then there\u2019s our house \u2013 you will probably see fuzz balls in corners and d\u00e9cor items will not pass that white glove test!\u00a0 Of course, there are people who have both or neither mastered.<\/p>\n<p>Dusting every week is something I just don\u2019t want to do.\u00a0 As I looked at my behavior and feelings, it occurred to me that I was trying to make myself do the cleaning like my mom had me clean \u2013 each week we\u2019d clean the house, all in one day.\u00a0 Here we are back to the idea of finding what works for you, we can change the ways we do things to fit with our personality.<\/p>\n<p>First, I looked at where I cleaned easily.\u00a0 I get the dishes done regularly, though not the way my mom would do it.\u00a0 It works for us.\u00a0 Vacuuming certain areas of the house \u2013 where the cat hair dominates \u2013 is done fairly regularly.\u00a0 I congratulated myself for the things I do well, even in the realm of cleaning.<\/p>\n<p>Then I examined my preference for cleaning as part of having things cleared out.\u00a0 A great time for cleaning the bathroom was when I washed the towels.\u00a0 The bathroom was cleared of them then and was a great time to dig in and get everything spic and span before I put the fresh towels back in.<\/p>\n<p>Next, I found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flylady.com\/index.asp\">FlyLady<\/a> and she presents the idea that we can do a little bit of cleaning each day and break the house into zones.\u00a0 In the way she developed this system, over the course of a month your house is actually cleaned more thoroughly than if you set aside a day for cleaning each week.\u00a0 I tweaked her set up to fit with our house and my style, but the idea of doing a little every day I could actually enjoy doing!\u00a0 For those who need it, she includes de-cluttering in her system.<\/p>\n<p>Have I mastered cleaning?\u00a0 Nope, but it is a process and in setting up new systems, it takes time. Also, I continue to look at what is not working, with curiosity, to see if there is another piece I could tweak.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you do not struggle with cleaning, though this is an example of how to approach whatever you might struggle with and discover an approach that will work for you.\u00a0 Make sure you recognize where you succeed and give yourself a congratulations.\u00a0 When you identify how things fit for you, you can develop systems for getting a handle on those things you\u2019ve struggled with.\u00a0 If you can limit the self-criticism, you can keep an open mind about finding solutions, as you need them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cleaning is not one of my strengths, in fact I dislike it, yet working through a couple of steps, I found ways to get the cleaning done that fit with my style.
