{"id":177,"date":"2010-10-13T20:34:09","date_gmt":"2010-10-14T01:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/?p=177"},"modified":"2010-10-13T20:34:09","modified_gmt":"2010-10-14T01:34:09","slug":"following-through","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/2010\/10\/following-through\/","title":{"rendered":"Following Through"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know that when I started writing this weekly blog that I was not sure how many I could write?\u00a0 I had a several ideas I was excited to share, but doubts crept in.\u00a0 Did I really have enough to write something EVERY week?\u00a0 I knew I was passionate about sharing my ideas, wanting to help people.\u00a0 Despite those doubts, I jumped in, figuring that if I did run out of ideas, I would deal with it at that point.\u00a0 This is not unlike deciding to make a change in the way we handle something \u2013 like setting goals to be more organized.<\/p>\n<p>This very blog is my 52nd \u2013 I have now been doing this for a year!\u00a0 There have been times when I struggled to write, the inspiration faltered.\u00a0 Yet as with many things, the motivation can be halfhearted and what you decide to do with that feeling is that matters.\u00a0 Even if few people were reading my blog, I felt the obligation to push through and write something.<\/p>\n<p>When we set up new patterns, there may be times when we\u2019re faced with that \u201cI just don\u2019t wanna\u201d feeling.\u00a0 What are you going to do about it?\u00a0 What you end up doing is the most important thing.\u00a0 The truth is that part of you does want to, otherwise you wouldn\u2019t have set out to make changes.\u00a0 The motivation can falter and to keep on the path of making changes, we need to push through those moments.\u00a0 Remind ourselves why we embarked on the path we chose.<\/p>\n<p>Too often I struggle with the drive to be perfect.\u00a0 Everything needs to reflect the best of myself.\u00a0 For more than a decade I\u2019ve accepted that this is too much to aim for, that it interfered with my ability to get things done.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of the classic reasons people struggle with procrastination \u2013 I was no exception.\u00a0 This blog has been posted sometimes with less than perfect results.\u00a0 I still cringe that this or that post was rather blah.\u00a0 I\u2019ve struggled with seeing how inadequately it feels like I\u2019ve expressed my thoughts.\u00a0 What matters is not that I am perfect, but that I continue.<\/p>\n<p>If you set out to work on organizing for x amount of time a day, there may be days that you get less done than other days.\u00a0 Everyone has off days.\u00a0 You might even find that you need to re-do some things, you forgot how you set something up, or whatever.\u00a0 It is not about being perfect; it\u2019s about following through on the resolutions you decided on.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve mentioned before that it typically take 21 consistent days before it becomes a habit \u2013 and even longer if you struggle with attention issues.\u00a0 The key there is the 21 days in a row.\u00a0 I\u2019m doing this once a week, so in some ways it is not habit.\u00a0 I do get a feeling each week, the knowledge I need to do something, though the day on which that happens varies!\u00a0 A few times I almost posted on Tuesday, or sometimes forgetting until late on Wednesday to get everything posted.<\/p>\n<p>When we are looking at changing the way we handle something on a more sporadic basis, anything less than daily \u2013 I promote linking it to something else.\u00a0 I have whole posts just talking about this idea and how helpful it can be setting up new routines.\u00a0 The lack of a daily routine for some things can make it that much more challenging and finding a way to still implement it is important.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m excited that I\u2019ve reached a year of posts and although my inspiration falters from time to time, I\u2019m in this for the long-term.\u00a0 It matters to me.\u00a0 Persistence is critical to creating new patterns.\u00a0 Getting tripped up sometimes is unfortunate, but need not stop you from trying again.\u00a0 Now there\u2019s a year of posts that outline many different approaches for handling various struggles you might face.\u00a0 Always remember there\u2019s hope to make a lasting change for the better.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the anniversary of my 52nd blog, I parallel writing this weekly blog to the process of setting up new resolutions.  It can be challenging and fraught with obstacles, yet there are ways to get through those and still pursue your goals.
