{"id":364,"date":"2011-03-02T18:18:10","date_gmt":"2011-03-03T00:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/?p=364"},"modified":"2011-03-02T15:55:57","modified_gmt":"2011-03-02T21:55:57","slug":"simplifying-electronic-back-ups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/2011\/03\/simplifying-electronic-back-ups\/","title":{"rendered":"Simplifying Electronic Back Ups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two years ago my husband\u2019s computer crashed.\u00a0 Needless to say, he lost many files.\u00a0 Yet, this is not to say that he wasn\u2019t backing up his files regularly.\u00a0 That\u2019s the calamity of a computer crashing, you can be \u201cgood\u201d and back-up regularly, yet if the computer crashes between those times, you\u2019ll lose files \u2013maybe not a lot, but it can still be an important one.\u00a0 This happens with any computer, since at the time, his computer was relatively new.\u00a0 This continues to stay with me, even fueling my concern about protecting my own data.<\/p>\n<p>I use multiple tools for backing up my electronic data, at varying intervals \u2013 from the external hard drive that lives in the safe and I end up pulling it out a few times a year to the DVD+RW disks I aim to use once a month.\u00a0 Notice I said \u201caim\u201d \u2013 I\u2019m not always as consistent as I want to be since it\u2019s time consuming.\u00a0 I talked about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/2011\/02\/drop-files-you-use-here\/\">Dropbox<\/a> last month and I do use that, but it only holds so much and I\u2019m too frugal to pay for more!<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where <a href=\"http:\/\/mozy.com\/home\">Mozy<\/a> comes in.\u00a0 Mozy is designed as a file back-up service where you can choose the specific files you want backed up as well as the frequency at which you want it to back those files up.\u00a0 I appreciate that there\u2019s a <a href=\"http:\/\/mozy.com\/home\/free\/\">free version for 2GB<\/a>, though I do find their prices to be quite reasonable for more space.\u00a0 They work with Mac or PC and their website says they\u2019ve got high-grade encryption.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been using Mozy long enough that I\u2019m using the second version.\u00a0 I\u2019m grateful that there\u2019s been some improvements as I\u2019d had some trouble with parts of Mozy before this.\u00a0 Despite how <a title=\"We Must Always Change blog post\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/2011\/02\/we-must-always-change\/\">inevitable change is<\/a>, I still sometimes resist that very change.\u00a0 There\u2019s features I miss from the old version though too.<\/p>\n<p>Choosing the files to have Mozy back up is easy.\u00a0 For me, the files I choose are the ones that change most frequently.\u00a0 Remember how if the computer crashes between back-ups, you\u2019ve lost that information, well, I selected files that I would hate to lose and those I am modifying.\u00a0 One of those things is my e-mail.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of e-mail, last week I talked about <a title=\"Set Times for Handling E-Mail\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jenniferlinnig.com\/wordpress\/2011\/02\/set-times-for-handling-e-mail\/\">dealing with e-mail<\/a> and one of the first things that Mozy lists is how many e-mails it can back up: 250,000 text e-mails with the 2GB version and 6,250,000 with the regular MozyHome version.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s simple to choose when you want Mozy to back everything up.\u00a0 It\u2019s also a fast process.\u00a0 In the first version, the speed could be a huge issue, but I\u2019ve been thrilled with the speed now.\u00a0 I like that I set the interval, once a day, and can choose a time of day that it does the back up.\u00a0 It\u2019s so automatic that I don\u2019t need to think about it or set aside time to do something with.<\/p>\n<p>I miss the ability to open a little window and see how much time is left before the back up is complete, though this is hardly ever long enough to warrant that feature.\u00a0 They still struggle with warnings.\u00a0 It was bad in the last version \u2013 to the extent that I had several days when it didn\u2019t back up, and I didn\u2019t know until I was looking into something else.\u00a0 I\u2019ve only had one day with the latest version where I had a warning.\u00a0 It was obvious; I saw it on the day that it happened.\u00a0 Unfortunately, I\u2019m not sure what the warning was for, though I think it was for the computer not backing up.<\/p>\n<p>Although I\u2019ve never had to use the feature, Mozy says that it\u2019s easy to get the information from one computer to another.\u00a0 As I looked around to see what other people were saying, certainly some dissatisfied customers had problems with Mozy\u2019s service and getting their lost files.<\/p>\n<p>Mozy is also not the typical cloud computing that I talk about, although the information is not stored on your computer, it\u2019s not accessible from all the devices that can access the Internet.\u00a0 Nevertheless it\u2019s useful to have back ups in more than one place, and to have files automatically backed up so that you can reduce the amount you might lose in case calamity strikes and your computer crashes.\u00a0 I do appreciate having another set of back ups for my electronic information, especially one that I don\u2019t need to think about much.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Losing electronic data can be a horrifying experience and unless you\u2019re backing everything up each time you change something, you risk losing something.  Never mind that external hard drives and +RW disks can be time consuming to use as a frequent back up system, there\u2019s an option for automatic, daily back ups.
