The ordinary acts we practice every day at home are of more importance to the soul than their simplicity might suggest. -Thomas Moore
Looking at my life, when I was organized I was able to embrace life more fully. Quality of life is directly related to being organized.
I can say this because there were times in my life when I was surrounded by chaos. It felt like everything was just falling apart – I was struggling to hold it together while trying to keep moving forward.
One of those times was just as I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. I could not control my body, and instead I focused my energy on controlling my space. I saw how many endless possibilities there were for organizing since I needed to consider different approaches for myself. As I was dealing with new limitations, it crystallized for me how important finding systems that fit one’s personality really was. It also illustrated clearly how systems need to change sometimes, life happens and the system needs to be refined.
I was also able to practice getting organized from frequently moving around – having lived in 7 states and moving close to 30 times in my life –each time you move, you need to settle in and figure out where to put everything. I think that all the moving influenced me in appreciating differences; I love the diversity this world has to offer.
I finally settled down in 2000 when I got my master's degree from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee in library science (the closest thing there is to an advanced degree in organizing!).
Despite all the efforts to the contrary, organizing can be a process that bring setbacks and false starts. We lead busy lives and frequently (if not constantly) juggling multiple roles. Being perfect and having complete organization is a lot to ask of ourselves, what we need is the knowledge of how to reclaim the balance with little effort.
I understand, having struggled myself, and bring my non-judgmental approach to your struggles. I am here to find a solution that works for you – your personality and style. I love the challenge of thinking of alternative ways to handle issues and find that even after a potential solution has been found, I continue to think about more approaches that could work.
I believe in helping you figure out what stays – although I might challenge you – the decision is only yours. My approach is to help you figure out how to create the life and home you want with the knowledge that you will be able to maintain it.
